A Christmas Makeover with Thrift Store Containers

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / A Christmas Makeover with Thrift Store Containers

Hello Sweet Friends,

Today I’m sharing a Christmas makeover of three ugly containers that I purchased from a Goodwill outlet store. When I bought them, I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to do with them, but I just knew they had potential. Follow along to see the transformation! You won’t be disappointed.

Items used in this makeover project

  • three Goodwill containers
  • three blocks of floral foam
  • three white Dollar Tree Christmas trees
  • burlap ribbon
  • three strands of battery-powered twinkle lights
  • gray and white chalk paint and paint brush

My first thought for this project was that all three containers needed a good cleaning, which I did.

Then I thought the containers needed to be more similar, so I accomplished this with chalk paint. I chose chalk paint because it requires no sanding and will adhere to any surface, even shiny surfaces like brass. I began with the gray paint, applying two coats. And then dry brushed with the white paint.

I glued a block of foam into each pot, shaping it beforehand, if necessary.

Then I fluffed out the white Dollar Tree Christmas trees, and placed one into the block of foam in each container. After the trees were in, I used some pieces of burlap ribbon to cover the foam as best as I could.

The next step was adding some twinkle lights to each tree. I just entwined the strand of lights around each tree, leaving the battery pack at the base of each tree.

I made sure to “hide” the battery packs under some of the burlap, so they did not show.

When the makeover was complete, I created a vignette my new trees and some mercury glass trees! I am LOVING how this looks. It was so easy and fun to create! What do you think?

I hope I’ve given you inspiration to “think outside the box” and get CREATIVE with those thrift store purchases.

Until next time, have a beautiful day!

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
