Hello Sweet Friends,
I’m always looking for new ways to make-over items from the Dollar Tree; turning them into attractive decor pieces in a budget-friendly way. I’ve transformed a DT candleholder into an “antique” kitchen scale, turned DT cookie sheets into a flower, made a faux drawer from DT picture frames, and created a rope tray from a DT burner cover. After making the rope tray, I was left with a small burner cover, so I put on my thinking cap, and came up with this Christmas decor idea. I’ve seen many beautiful signs made from wood circles, so I thought this burner cover would be a good budget-friendly alternative. It is certainly the right size and shape, but not as heavy as a wood circle plaque. I am SUPER happy with the way this Christmas sign turned out! I hope you like it too.
Supply list
- pack of Dollar Tree burner covers (small size only)
- white spray paint
- image from gift bag (or calendar, printable, etc)
- scissors
- Mod-Podge
- iridescent glitter or faux snow
- gift wrap cording
- glue gun
- ribbon and other embellishment
I found this CUTE gift bag at Walmart and immediately knew I wanted to use it for some kind of craft project. The burner cover pictured below is the smaller size and has already been painted with white paint from a previous craft project, so it was ready to go!

Both sides of the bag had the same image, but one side had glitter added and the other side was without glitter. I used the side with without. I centered the burner cover on the unglittered side of the bag and traced around it, then cut along the line.

Next, I applied a liberal layer of Mod Podge onto the burner cover and place the cut-out image onto it. It was a little large and overlapped the edges a little bit but I took care of that later. I also applied a topcoat of Mod Podge, smoothing out any air bubbles or wrinkles in the image. I used my dryer to help the project dry faster.

The next step was to trim off any excess paper from around the edge of the burner cover. And then I distressed the edges of the image with a sanding sponge.

I wasn’t really happy with the outer edge of the burner cover. It looked too much like… you know, a burner cover. So I wanted to disguise it a little bit. I found this red and white cording at Walmart and I glued it around the edge, starting at the top, glueing it around a total of three times.

Next I added some Mod Podge around the cording and edge, and sprinkled it with some iridescent glitter. I shook off the loose glitter.

I finished by glueing on a ribbon and some FUN Christmas embellishments to coordinate with the image. I also glued a small wire loop to the back to hang it with.

And I can’t tell you how PLEASED I am with the final project! How CUTE is this little Christmas sign. I don’t think anyone would ever know it started out as a Dollar Tree burner cover. Do you?

I hope I’ve inspired you with this fun little Christmas project. I hope you try to create something similar to decorate your home this Holiday Season!
Until next time.
Merry Christmas!
and
Happy Crafting!
Pamela
