Create a Christmas Stocking Wreath

You are here: Home / Christmas/Winter / Create a Christmas Stocking Wreath

Hello Sweet Friends,

For today’s craft, I am sharing a DIY Christmas stocking wreath. Although it’s not technically a “wreath” shape, the finished stocking is meant for wall or door decor rather than for hanging from the mantel. So I will stick with the somewhat inaccurate description.

When I found myself in possession of a few beautiful crocheted stockings, I wanted to come up with a unique decor idea for one of them. So I decided to fill a stocking with florals, making it suitable as a wall hanging or front door decor. But in order to do this, I had to figure out how to make the stocking more sturdy and keep it from being so bendable.

Follow along to see how I solved this issue and created a beautiful piece of Christmas decor.

Supply list

  • Christmas stocking
  • a piece of foam board
  • pen or pencil to trace with
  • exacto knife
  • floral foam
  • knife to cut foam
  • glue gun
  • poly-fill or cotton batting
  • stems of faux florals and Christmas embellishments
  • wire cutters
  • ribbon
  • scissors

Let’s get started!

The first step in this project was to make the stocking more sturdy. To do this, I traced the stocking onto a piece of foam board and cut it out about an inch inside the line. That way, the stocking shape could easily be inserted into the stocking with room to spare.

The foam board looked a little lumpy and uneven, but that did not matter at all because it would completely be covered by the stocking.

Filling the stocking with poly-fil was the next step. I actually used the filling from a cheap pillow from Dollar Tree. I just stuffed a light layer on top of the foam board, starting at the toe and working my way up, leaving a little room at the top to glue a small block of foam.

Then I glued a small block of foam to the top of the foam board stocking, and placed a little more of the poly-fil on either side.

If I was estimating the size of the foam, I would say 4″ x 4″ x 2”.

Finishing the Christmas Stocking Wreath

Now I was ready to add the florals and embellishments. The large red poinsettia was from Dollar Tree and the rest of the stems from Walmart.

I began with the poinsettia, cut the stem with wire cutters and placed into the foam. Then added the rest of the stems around it until I was pleased with how it looked. The candy canes were then added. And lastly, I added the red velvet bow. (Need some faux candy canes for your craft projects? Here’s my Amazon affiliate link: https://amzn.to/4eEQHyX )

And Oh my gosh! How adorable is this stocking?

This was very EASY and so much FUN to create; I ended up making a few more.
I hope you like this idea as much as I do.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
