Hello Sweet Friends,
For today’s DIY project, I will be showing you how to create a spindle Christmas tree. A friend had given me some spindles after a home remodeling project, so I was excited to finally get to use them in a decor idea.
There are so many different things you can create with spindles and, of course, I also like the idea of upcycling an item normally destined for the landfill. So I wanted to come up with an EASY idea to share with you.
Follow along for the instructions to create a cute spindle Christmas tree. I hope you like it as much as I do.
Supplies needed
- spindles
- Dollar Tree mini Christmas tree
- Dollar Tree Jenga blocks
- off-white chalk paint and antique wax
- ribbon and embellishment
- glue gun
- E6000
- tools for cutting the spindles, mitre saw and drill press with 5/16 drill bit
As you can see in the above picture, the spindles I used for this project only have a small area where they are decorative. So I wanted to make the spindle trees with that section of the spindle.
I had my handy husband cut the spindles down for me, two different lengths. He used a mitre saw to do that. Then using a drill press, he drilled a hole in the top of each spindle about an inch and a half deep.
To create a base for the spindle tree, I used some of the “jenga” blocks from Dollar Tree. I used hot glue and E6000 glue both together. The hot glue provides a more immediate hold, while the E6000 provides a long-term hold.
For the next step I glue the spindles to the bases, and painted them with Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster.
Then using Waverly antique wax, I lightly brushed onto the spindles for a distressed look.
Once everything was dry, I was ready to add the mini Christmas tree. I did this by placing hot glue and E6000 onto the stem of the mini tree and placing it into the spindle.
Then I started fluffing out the tree, bending the stems into a down swept shape, one layer at a time. I trimmed the top of the tree a little bit.
The final step in this project was to add some embellishments. I glue on some fabric strips along with some Christmas greens and berries. Then topped off the trees with a few stars.
And I just can’t tell you how HAPPY I am with this project! It turned out so CUTE!
I had to stage the trees a few different ways, before I find that perfect spot.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little project and are inspired to try something similar.
Happy Crafting!
