Hello Sweet Friends,
For today’s DIY, I will decorate a Dollar Tree acorn for fall. As you probably already know, Dollar Tree has several different wood cut-outs for the fall season. I’ve chosen the acorn for this project, but there are also leafs, ghosts, pumpkins, and turkeys, to name a few.
The wood cut-outs are basically a blank canvas that you can get creative with. You can paint or stain them, cover them with fabric or paper; the sky is the limit for ideas.
For my project, I chose to Mod Podge a napkin onto the acorn and also create the acorn top (is there a name for that?) out of a Dollar Tree wall tile.
I hope you like this DIY as much as I do. Follow along and see just how easy this fall decor piece is to create.
Supply list
- Dollar Tree acorn cut-out
- Dollar Tree wall tile
- napkin with checked pattern
- Mod Podge and paint brush
- off white paint and antique wax
- pen or pencil
- scissors
- parchment paper
- small crafting iron
- fall embellishment
- hot glue gun
The first order of business was to attach the napkin to the acorn shape. Usually I will apply a coat of white paint as a base. But it was not necessary for this project, so I applied a very liberal coat of Mod Podge to the acorn and let it dry.
Then using a piece of parchment paper and a small crafting iron, I ironed one-ply of the napkin onto the acorn. The heat from the iron softens the Mod Podge enough for the napkin to attach without wrinkles. How cool is that?
Once the acorn had cooled, I cut the excess napkin as close as I could. Then I added some Mod Podge around the edges and folded the napkin edges around onto the back of the acorn.
For the acorn top, I traced onto a Dollar Tree wall tile.
I had to freehand part of the acorn top; and then I cut it out with scissors.
I ended up having to trim the acorn top down a little more to make sure that it would fit. Then I gave it a coat of the Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster, and finished it with a little Waverly antique wax.
After the paint and wax had dried, I hot glued the top to the acorn and it was ready for some embellishments. It’s looking pretty CUTE already, in my humble opinion.
Once I had added a messy bow and a few fall embellishments, this project was finished!
And I am so HAPPY with the results.
Didn’t this project turn out SUPER CUTE? And of course, I just LOVE the neutral colors!
Do you love using neutral colors in your fall decor? Let me know.
I hope I’ve inspired you with this fun little idea for a DIY fall decor item. If not an acorn, then try one of the other wooden shapes at Dollar Tree; they are so much FUN to get CREATIVE with!
Until next time…….
Happy Crafting!
