Hello friends! July 4th is over a month away, and there are so many ways to show off your red, white, and blue spirit. Today I made a cute little patriotic sign using a wooden heart sign and a paper napkin. I’m excited to share with you how easy it was to make and hope to inspire you to create one for yourself. I originally bought the heart sign from JoAnn’s back if February; I thought I would use if for a Valentine craft project, but never got around to it. But I have to say that it worked out perfectly for this craft project. Follow along and see for yourself!
Items needed for Patriotic Flag Heart Sign
- wooden heart sign
- flag paper napkin
- Mod Podge and small paint brush
- sanding sponge
- U, S, and A Scrabble tiles, optional
- glue gun

I started by unfolding the napkin and cutting off only the front piece, then separating the two layers. This leaves a single very thin layer of the paper napkin.

You can see how thin the napkin is at this point. I checked to see if it fit on the heart sign and noticed that I didn’t quite cover all of the edges. I didn’t let that bother me too much because I knew I was going to distress the finished product. Normally I would have painted the wood with white paint before attaching the napkin, but I knew I wanted the sign to have a vintage, distressed look; and it was ok with me if the wood showed through a little. So I brushed on a liberal amount of Mod Podge to the sign and laid the napkin down, gently smoothing out the wrinkles as best I could. Then I applied a top coat of Mod Podge to it.

You can see a little bit of wood peeking around the outside edges in a few places. But not to worry, I will be taking care of that soon enough! Once it was dry, I tore the outer part of the napkin away.

Next I sanded the edges of the heart sign. I also used the pointy end of a skewer to separate the napkin between the slats of the sign.

For a finishing touch, I glued on three Scrabble tiles spelling USA .

I really love how this little project turned out!

I hope I’ve given you a little inspiration to show off your patriotic spirit and make a flag sign to add to your decor this summer!
