Hello Friends and Happy Autumn!
Isn’t autumn such a lovely time of year? Changing leaves, pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, mums…. I love all of the beautiful colors of the season. Today, I have a easy and budget-friendly DIY decor project perfect for your home this fall. Follow along and I’ll show you how to make a beautiful Autumn Hat.
Items needed for Autumn Hat
- undecorated hat (I got mine from Dollar Tree)
- plastic charger plate (from Dollar Tree) optional
- ribbon and a few pipe cleaners
- assorted fall artificial leaves and florals
- scissors, wire cutters, glue gun
I found my hat at the Dollar Tree in the springtime. I’m not sure I’ve seen them during the fall season but it’s possible. The hat is a little floppy, so I also purchased a charger plate to use as a base in order to make the hat more sturdy for hanging.
Before gluing the hat to the charger, I drilled two holes in the charger, so I could use a length of twine for hanging. If you have a hat that is sturdy, you can skip this step altogether.
I made sure when I glued the hat to the charger that the uneven edge where the hat brim is stitched together is at the bottom so it will be covered up with the ribbon. See picture below.
The next step is to tie a bow. I chose two neutral-colored ribbons so the vivid fall colors would really POP!
I tied two separate bows each secured with a pipe cleaner in the center.
Then I attached the two bows together securing it with another pipe cleaner. I cut off the excess pipe cleaner stems before gluing the bow to the hat.
Before adding any of the fall leaves, I cut them all individually from the stems. Then I began gluing them down flat around the hat.
As I went around the hat, I varied the different colored leaves as much as possible.
Next, I glued small pieces of artificial “wheat” onto the leaves, which I had already cut from the stem into small pieces.
I continued the same steps with each item that I added. Next added were berries.
Then I added some greenery.
And then bittersweet.
And, finally, mini sunflowers.
The final step was to add a little fall pizazz to the bow. So I glued some fall leaves and sunflowers into bow.
I also added some corn shucks, feathers, berries, and mini pumpkins into the bow. And ran a piece of narrow buffalo check ribbon around the hat to coordinate with the big bow.
And I am so PLEASED with the final results!
How CUTE is this hat for your front door? They say “home is where you hang your hat,” and what a perfect way to welcome your guests as well as the autumn season!
Happy Crafting!
