DIY Christmas Swag for Outdoor Light Fixture

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / DIY Christmas Swag for Outdoor Light Fixture

Hello Sweet Friends,

I hope today finds you well and ready for another Christmas DIY. This project is for a Christmas swag suitable to hang from an outdoor light fixture. It really is a fun DIY and can be very budget-friendly depending on what you choose to decorate the swag with. I actually made two swags to hang from lights on either side of my front door and I just love them. Anyway, follow along and see how I transformed some Dollar Tree Christmas trees into decorative swags for my front porch lights.

Items needed for two Christmas swags

  • two Dollar Tree Christmas trees
  • package of wired garland ties from Dollar Tree
  • two stems of pinecones X2
  • two stems of red berries X2
  • small white branches
  • red velvet ribbon and buffalo check ribbon
  • wire cutters, scissors, glue gun, wire

As you can see, I purchased my ribbon from Wal-mart and the other accessories from At Home. If you decide to create swags of your own, feel free to use ribbon and accessories from wherever you choose.

I began this DIY by unboxing and fluffing out the trees so they were flat on one side. I did not use the tree stand pieces and set them off to the side.

I worked the pine cone stems into the “swag” and held them in place by twisting a few of the green branches around them. You could also add glue for extra security.

I attached the red berries the same way as the pine cones, by twisting the green stems around them. Glue could be added if necessary.

Finally, I added a bow of red velvet and buffalo check to each swag; then glued in a few white branches.

I had to use a long piece of wired garland tie to attach a swag to my light fixture. You can see this from the side view but not from the front.

I just love how they look on my front porch! What do you think?

I hope I’ve inspired you to create swags for your home this Christmas. You can use just about any color scheme or theme that you like. Get creative! The sky is the limit!

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
