DIY Fall Heart Sign

(Dollar Tree sign makeover)

Hello Sweet Friends,

For today’s craft project, I decided to makeover a Dollar Tree Valentine heart-shaped sign. I don’t really decorate a lot for Valentines Day. In fact, not very much at all. But FALL decorations are only second to Christmas decorations in my home. So I decided that the perfect thing to do was to give this little heart sign and FALL makeover. And I’m so GLAD I did. I hope you like it as much as I do. It’s a very easy and budget-friendly project. Enjoy!

Supply list

• Dollar Tree heart shaped sign
• Dollar Tree decorative wall tile
• Mod Podge
• scissors
• white paint
• brown paint or stain
• cinnamon
• fall ribbon, floral, and embellishments
• glue gun
• Scrabble tiles spelling out “I LOVE FALL MOST OF ALL,” optional

This particular Valentine sign, had the word love, attached to it. It is made of metal, so I pried it off and set it aside because I thought I might use it for another project later on. Then I traced the heart onto the wall tile, and cut it out.

For the next step, I applied a liberal layer of Mod Podge to the sign, using a sponge brush. Then pressed the wall tile heart on top, and let it dry.

A nice coat of white paint was next, followed by dry brushing with some brown paint. The brown paint gives it a distressed and aged look.

To give the sign a very VINTAGE vibe, the next step was adding cinnamon to it. Start by brushing Mod Podge here and there on the sign, wherever you would like to add a rusty look. Sprinkle with cinnamon, they shake off the excess. Add a top coat of Mod Podge to the entire surface. Then let dry. I love the RUSTY look that the cinnamon adds to the project.

Time to add the final touches. Glue any florals, ribbon, and embellishments toward the center of the heart, keeping the outer edges of the heart visible.

Now at this point, the project could be finished. However I chose to add the short message, I LOVE FALL MOST OF ALL, in Scrabble tile letters. I just hot glued them into place. I also glued a twine hanger onto the back.

I just LOVE how this makeover project turned out! I LOVE everything about it; the rustic wall tile, the muted fall colors, the sweet little fall quote. It really is the PERFECT piece to add to my fall decor this year.
