Hello Friends,
I’m bringing you another beautiful and budget-friendly craft project today. I will be showing you how to create a beautiful faux flower out of Dollar Tree cookie trays. There’s a lot of flexibility for this project. You can vary the size and color, or make it for indoor or outdoor. It’s a fairly easy project, but can be a little time-consuming depending on how much detail you want to put into it. More about that later; let’s get started!
Items you will need for this project
- 4 – two-packs of Dollar Tree cookie trays
- round silver tray from Dollar Tree
- assorted colors of chalk paint and paint brush
- scissors, Sharpie
- glue gun and E6000 glue
- small length of twine to use for hanging
I began my faux flower by drawing three different size petals on all eight cookie trays; then cutting them out.
I had eight of each size petal. I only ended up using six of the smallest size petals rather than eight. But no worries, I was able to use for the center of the faux flower. I also cut some long thin strips from the outer edge of the cookie tray which I also added to my flower. This is totally optional.
I somewhat “assembled” my flower to see how it would look before I started to paint.
I chose mostly neutral colors for my flower with some blue and green added. You could use literally any color you want to. I find that chalk paint will stick really well to any surface, so that’s what I used. (You could even use spray paint, and just spray all of the petals one solid color. That would be much quicker.)
I wanted to have an ombre look for my flower, so I painted each petal with varying colors of the paints. I didn’t worry about getting the base of the petal painted all of the way because it will be covered up when the project is finished. The long strips and the center of the flower were painted with the same colors, as pictured. Once the paint was dried, I was ready to start assembling my faux flower.
Using both hot glue and E6000 glue, I began attaching the largest flower petals to the round Dollar Tree tray. The reason I use both glues is that the hot glue can be a somewhat temporary hold, but the E6000 is a very permanent glue when it dries. Sometimes hot glue will pop loose, especially with smooth surfaces and in humid outdoor conditions.
The tray from Dollar Tree is a very sturdy surface to glue the petals onto. Working from the outside in, I continued gluing petals onto the tray.
After I got all of the flower petals and the center glued together, I glued a loop of twin to the back for hanging. (Oops! Forgot to get a picture of that.) After the glue is dry, the faux flower was ready to display.
I am just so pleased with how this faux flower looks on my back door! I hope I’ve inspired you make one for yourself. Looks great outdoors on a door, porch, or patio. Also could be used indoors for home decor!
See you next time.
