DIY Lace Butterfly

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / DIY Lace Butterfly

Hello Sweet Friends,

It’s time for another Dollar Tree DIY. For today’s project, I will be showing you how to create a beautiful DIY lace butterfly using items from Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Although this could be considered a spring or summer craft, I believe the finished piece could really be used year-round.

Follow along as I show you step by step how to create this beauty. There could be so many variations on how to create this butterfly; different fabrics that could be used, additional embellishments that could be added, etc. My hope is that you are inspired by this version and create something similar for you home.

Supplies needed

  • Dollar Tree costume butterfly wings
  • Lace fabric, got mine at Dollar General
  • scissors
  • instant coffee, optional
  • glue gun
  • Dollar Tree burlap trim
  • short spindle
  • two strips of off-white fabric
  • wire

As you can see, my two main supplies for this DIY are holiday items; DT patriotic butterfly wings and a DG Christmas lace table runner (half price). Luckily the pattern on the table runner was floral, but not Christmas-y. I decided that I wanted to coffee-stain the lace before I used it. To do this I added a few large spoons of instant coffee into a large bowl of water, and soaked the lace for about 30 minutes.

It is hard to tell in the above picture, but the lace is lightly stained with the coffee. I allowed the lace to dry overnight before I used it.

I moved on to the butterfly wings and cut off the red, white, and blue material, leaving the wire frame.

Attaching the Lace to the Butterfly Wings

Then I cut a piece of the lace to fit each part of the wings, making sure to cut them larger than necessary. There were four pieces in total.

With a hot glue gun, I began slowly attaching the pieces of lace to the wire form. I folded the excess around the wire and glued in place.

As each section of the wings was finished, I cut off the excess lace. I kept repeating the process for each of the four sections of the wings.

Adding trim to the DIY Lace Butterfly

In order to cover the wire and any glue that may have showed through, I used some burlap trim that I got from Dollar Tree.

Again, using my hot glue gun I glued the trim around the outer edge of each wing section. I also glue a small piece of fabric in the center to cover up the red material. Isn’t this project coming along nicely so far?

Now I just needed to add the body of the butterfly, so I decided to use a spindle that I already had. I used a fabric strip to tie the spindle to the butterfly wings.

Then I fashioned some antennae from a piece of wire and glued that to the head.

DIY Lace Butterfly

Oh my gosh, didn’t this lace butterfly turn out so BEAUTIFUL? I just LOVE it! Sometimes a DIY project ends up better that expected and this is one of those times.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
