Hello Sweet Friends,
Today’s project, DIY mason jar lid fabric flowers, could cost you as little as $0 if you have some scrap fabric and mason jar lids at your house. The flowers may take a little bit of time to create, but WOWZA do they look pretty awesome when they are finished.
I already had the mason jar lids and some fabric at home, but I have to admit that I did purchase a few “fat quarters” of fabric for two of the flowers I made, because I wanted a certain color. This would still be a very budget-friendly craft, even if you have to buy new supplies.
Gather up your supplies and come craft with me.
Supply list
- canning jar lids/rings
- 30-40 fabric strips, 1” x 9” approx.
- scissors
- small piece of coordinating fabric for center
- small amount of cotton batting
- small foam board or cardboard circle
- glue gun
- dowel rod
- green fabric or ribbon for leaves
- buttons, optional
The first step for this project was to cut or tear the fabric into strips approximately 1” x 9”. I took the fat quarter of fabric (18” x 21”) and cut it into two 9″ x 21” pieces. Then without measuring, I ripped each piece into approximately 20 strips. I didn’t measure, I just eyed it and started ripping. There is no need to be exact with this. In fact, I think each flower looks more unique with slight variations in the size of the fabric strips.
For the next step, I began tying each individual strip of fabric onto one of the canning jar rings.
I just kept tying and tying until the entire ring was covered with “flower petals.”
To create the center of the flower, I had to cut a circle from foam board a little smaller that the lid, so it would fit. Originally I was going to use the lid top that came with the ring, but it was too large.
I added a little cotton batting, then glued the fabric onto the circle. Then I added a layer of burlap on top of that. (The pictures below are actually the lid top, but I redid it with a small circle of foam board)
I pressed the fabric circle into the flower ring. It can be secured with some hot glue if desired.
The I glued a small dowel rod onto the back to create a stem. Then tied a green piece of ribbon or fabric for a few leaves.
For a final flourish, I glued a few buttons into the center. And I had myself a super CUTE sunflower! I was just so THRILLED with how this turned out that I made a couple more to add to my next DIY project.
Oh my gosh! I am SO crushing on these! I will definitely be making more of these flowers SOON.
I hope I’ve inspired you to give this DIY a try. It is just so EASY and budget-friendly, you can’t go wrong.
Until next time….
Happy Crafting!
