Throw pillows are a great way to update a room or add seasonal decor to a space. I love to decorate with them but, have you seen the prices of some pillows lately? Yikes!
Instead, I’ll show you a super easy and inexpensive way to make your own throw pillow out of a placemat.
Here is what you’ll need for this project:
- Two-sided placemat
- Cheap pillow or Poly-fil
- Scissors
- Glue gun
I found this beautiful Thanksgiving placemat at Target last year. You could use any placemat as long as it is two-sided. I’ve even seen some at Dollar Tree and Dollar General. I bought a cheap pillow from Dollar General to use for stuffing, but you could also use an old pillow or Poly-Fil instead.
The first step is to cut a four or five inch slit on the back side of the placemat along a seam. The bottom seam is usually the best, because it’s not as visible on the finished pillow. But since this placemat has fringe on the sides, I cut a slit behind the fringe, because I thought it would help hide my work if it was a little messy. Next I cut open the cheap pillow and using its contents, began stuffing the placemat, making sure to fill in the corners. I used all the stuffing from the Dollar General pillow to make a nice full, fluffy placemat pillow.
When I finished stuffing the pillow, I glued the slit closed. The finished “seam” looks a little messy but it’s hidden well behind the fringe so it does not show at all from the front side of the pillow.
And in less than 15 minutes, here is the finished Thanksgiving placemat pillow! Easy-peasy and I think it turned out super cute. What do you think?
