DIY Pumpkin Decor

You are here: Home / Autumn / DIY Pumpkin Decor

Hello Sweet Friends,
or should I say Hello Pumpkins?

The first day of AUTUMN is fast approaching and will be here before you know it. I just LOVE everything about season; beautiful leaves, chilly nights, cozy sweaters, hot apple cider, pumpkin spice, bonfires, and of course, fall crafting!
Today’s CRAFT idea features a makeover of Christmas sign that I’ve had for several years. I don’t really use it in my Christmas decorations anymore and was going to donate it to Goodwill, but just knew I could put it to good use instead. So I put it in my craft stash and NOW I’ve made the cutest pumpkin out of it. In fact, most of the things used in this makeover were already in my craft stash with the exception of the little wooden cut-out that I got at Michael’s this year.
Follow along to see how I transformed an old Christmas sign into a beautiful pumpkin decor piece.

Supply list

  • old Christmas wooden sign
  • small wooden cut-out ornament – hello fall
  • white, orange, and brown paint, and paint brush
  • 2 wooden spools
  • fall leaves and berries
  • variety of fall ribbons
  • scissors
  • glue gun

Begin this project by painting the wood sign with white paint. Paint the front and all four sides. Allow to dry before going on. Any acrylic white paint will work.

Then apply two coats of orange paint; again painting the front and sides. Allow dry time between coats. I used Waverly chalk paint in the color pumpkin (a very appropriate name).

For an aged, vintage look, apply Waverly antique wax on the “pumpkin.” Rub with a paper towel to create a softer look. Also apply the antique wax to the two wooden spools.

Create a messy bow by stacking pieces of coordinating ribbon in a criss-cross pattern. Secure in the middle with a piece of twine. Trim the ribbons and fluff the bow as desired.

At this point, all that is left to do is to glue everything together. Begin by glueing the two spools together to form a pumpkin stem, then glue to the top of the pumpkin.

Glue the leaves, bow, and any other embellishments onto the pumpkin. It’s looking so CUTE!

Finally, glue the “hello fall” cut-out onto the front of the pumpkin.

I’m really LOVING this little pumpkin. It turned out even better than I thought it would. It’s ADORABLE!

Now I just need to figure out where I will be displaying this CUTIE!

I hope I’ve given you inspiration to makeover an old decor piece or a resale shop find. The possibilities are endless. Get creative and have fun with it!
It’s getting late here, so I better go before I turn into a pumpkin! LOL

Happy Fall!
and
Happy Crafting!

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
