DIY Red Velvet Ribbon Poinsettia

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / DIY Red Velvet Ribbon Poinsettia

Hello Friends,

Nothing looks more FESTIVE for the Christmas season than red velvet ribbon. You really don’t see it any other time of the year. I just LOVE using it in my holiday decorating and crafting. So today I’m showing you how to take less than a yard of red velvet ribbon and turn it into a beautiful poinsettia flower. So put on your favorite Christmas music and follow along.

Items needed for DIY ribbon poinsettia

  • one yard of wired red velvet ribbon, width 2.5″
  • half of a red pipe cleaner
  • seven pearls, or other embellishment for center
  • scissors
  • glue gun

The pipe cleaner and pearls were from the Dollar Tree. Red velvet ribbon can be found at most any craft store or you can find wired red velvet ribbon from Amazon https://amzn.to/3Dtx5yk with my affiliate link.

Begin the poinsettia flower by cutting four 8” pieces of the red velvet ribbon.

Cut both ends of each ribbon section to a point.

Gather and pinch together the center of one of the ribbon pieces, holding between the thumb and forefinger.

Continue doing this with a second piece of the red velvet ribbon, adding it to the first; holding both pinched pieces of ribbon between the thumb and forefinger.

Continue doing the same thing with the third piece of ribbon.

And the same with the final piece of ribbon. Grant yourself a little grace if it is difficult to hold all of that ribbon together. If you lose your grip on it, you can let go and begin assembling again. It won’t hurt the ribbon or the finished flower at all.

Then take the half pipe cleaner and wrap around the center; where the ribbon is pinched together.

Turn the “flower” over and tightly twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together.

Turn the flower back to the front side. Spread and fluff out the petals until it starts looking like a poinsettia.

Almost finished!

The final step is to add an embellishment to the center.

Using a glue gun, attach seven pearls in the center of the poinsettia. (Or other embellishment of your choice)

How GORGEOUS and FESTIVE is the finished poinsettia? I just LOVE it!

These poinsettias are so versatile, too. Use instead of a bow for a present or gift bag. Make several and use them to decorate a Christmas tree. Add them to a wreath or garland. Create poinsettias in different colors and sizes. So many possibilities!

I hope I’ve inspired you to create one or more red velvet poinsettias for your home this holiday season!

Wishing you a wonderful Christmas season!

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
