DIY Snowflake Sign

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / DIY Snowflake Sign

Hello Friends,

Decorating my home during the month of January alway proves to be a challenge. After putting away all of the Christmas decorations, my house seems a little bare and I’m not quite ready for spring decor. I will usually leave out a few winter decorations here and there. This year I’m adding a new decor piece which I am sharing with you today. I had a leftover blank wooden snowflake sign from the Dollar Tree that I never did anything with, so I created a cute little wintry sign out of it using a new technique (at least for me, it was new). So follow along and I’ll show you how easy it was to create!

Supplies needed for Snowflake Sign

  • wooden snowflake sign from Dollar Tree
  • printable, napkin, or other image to transfer
  • white paint
  • Mod Podge
  • scissors, paint brushes
  • parchment paper
  • iron
  • glitter, if desired
  • twine and beads for hanger

(I created this design with my Silhouette Cameo, but any image printed on paper or a napkin will work).

Begin this craft by painting the snowflake sign with two coats of white paint. I used the Apple Barrel brand from Walmart, but any acrylic white paint will do.

After the white paint is dry, give the snowflake sign a liberal coat of Mod Podge and let that dry.

Cut out your image and center onto the snowflake sign.

The next step is the new-to-me technique. Keeping the image centered, lay a piece of parchment paper over it.

Then apply an iron to it until the image has adhered to the snowflake. You can check it by lifting up part of the parchment paper and see if the edges of the image are fused to the snowflake. If everything looks good, you can remove the parchment paper.

At this point, the snowflake sign could be finished, but I always want to add something extra. So, I touched up with a little white and light gray paint.

Then added some iridescent glitter!

The final touch is adding a hanger made from beads and twine.

I just love how this project turned out. I’ve always loved the song “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music; the song from which these lyrics belong. I’m really going to enjoy displaying this sign in my home all winter long.

I hope I’ve inspired you to create something beautiful for your home this wintry season.

Winter Blessings
and Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
