Hello Friends,
I’ve got the cutest Valentine sign DIY for you today. It is made from a leftover Christmas sign I got at the local Dollar Tree that I never did anything with. The sign has good “bones”; a nice frame and beaded hanger, I just needed to tweak it to create a piece of Valentine’s Day decor. It’s a really easy project in which I just used mostly supplies I had around the house. So follow along to see how I created this “cute as a button” project.
Supplies needed for Valentine Sign
- Dollar Tree square Christmas sign, or any small square frame will work
- book page cut to fit the frame
- red buttons
- ribbon for embellishment, optional
- glue gun
- scissors
- pencil
- paper heart pattern
As I said before, the little sign is from Dollar Tree. I found the red buttons at Walmart. And the book page was copied from Pride and Prejudice. (It is in the public domain now, so it’s totally legal to use this way). Besides that, I just really hate to tear up a good book, even though digital copies are available.
I began by removing the beaded hanger, setting it aside to reattach later. Then I separated the frame from the sign. That was a little difficult because the adhesive used was really strong. To get it totally separated, I ruined the sign which was really okay, because I just turned it around and used the back side.
I cut down the book page to fit the frame, centered it, and hot glued it all back together.
Then I cut a heart stencil out of paper. I centered the heart onto the sign and penciled the image onto it.
Following along the heart image, I began to hot glue the first layer of red buttons on.
Some of the pencil line was showing, but I knew the next layer would cover that up. So I kept glueing those red buttons on.
First layer finished and onto the next!
And a final layer to finish the heart. I tried to fill in any gaps where the book page showed through.
After I reattached the beaded hanger, I decided the sign still needed a little bow to finish it off.
I just LOVE how this little sign turned out! I hope I’ve inspired you to make something similar for your home. Any frame would work, and it could be painted red, pink, white, etc. You could use just about any color buttons. You could use sheet music rather than a book page. The possibilities are endless. I really just encourage you to get CREATIVE with it!
This little sign can be used in a vignette, tiered tray, or hanging on a peg. Where would you display it in your home?
Happy Crafting!
Pamela
