DIY Winter Gift Bag Canvas Art

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / DIY Winter Gift Bag Canvas Art

Hello Friends,
Brrr…. Winter is definitely here and it’s COLD outside. I’m SO ready for some winter crafting and I hope you are too. I had a gift bag left over from Christmas that had a beautiful winter scene with deer on it and it was perfect for this craft idea. Follow along as I transform this gift bag into a piece of beautiful winter canvas art.

Supplies needed for this craft project

  • Gift bag (or other picture, printable, calendar page, etc)
  • 8 X 10 canvas (got mine from the Dollar Tree)
  • white and gray paint
  • Mod Podge
  • paint brush
  • parchment paper
  • iron
  • faux snow and glitter
  • scissors

Begin this easy project by painting the canvas the color of your choice. I painted mine mostly white with a touch of light gray to match the gift bag. It’s probably not 100 percent necessary to paint the canvas at all. It already has a coat of white Gesso or primer on it, but I like to have just a little paint on it.)
Once it is dry, follow that with a coat of Mod Podge and let that dry also.

While waiting for the canvas to dry, cut the image from the gift bag and remove the ribbon handle.

The gift bag I am using is approximately the same size as the canvas. There was only a little bit of the canvas showing around the perimeter when I centered it onto the canvas.

While keeping the image centered, place a sheet of parchment paper on top. The using an iron on a medium setting, iron the image onto the canvas using a slow circular motion. The heat from the iron will fuse the image to the canvas by melting the layer of Mod Podge. It’s just SO easy, I love using this technique.
Once the image is fused to the canvas, remove the parchment paper and discard.

The two holes left by the handle needed to be covered, so faux snow and GLITTER to the rescue. Using a paint brush, put Mod Podge onto the two holes and anywhere else on the canvas to make a more pleasing image; in the trees, on the ground, etc.

And I think this project turned out super cute! I’m going to set up a vignette with some other wintry decor for this winter season. January alway seems to be a challenging month for decor, but I think this piece is just perfect!

This canvas would be perfect to display in a vignette, gallery wall, or just about anywhere.

I hope you liked this project and I hope I’ve given you inspiration to create something beautiful for your home this wintry season.

Happy Crafting
and Winter Blessings!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
