Dollar Tree Nativity Scene Craft Idea

You are here: Home / Christmas/Winter / Dollar Tree Nativity Scene Craft Idea

Hello Sweet Friends,
Today, I have the sweetest little DIY for you; a Dollar Tree nativity scene craft idea. I don’t know if you’ve seen the small nativity scene craft kits from DT, but that is what I used for this project.

I knew that I wanted to include a hymn page with the craft kit, but initially I didn’t have a clear idea of what this piece would look like. After looking around in my craft stash, I found a DT sign that looked like it would be a perfect size for the project. So I got to work and the project seemed to come together quickly.

Follow along and I’ll show you how I created this piece.

Supply list

  • DT nativity scene kit
  • DT sign
  • hymn page
  • ribbon and small embellishments
  • small piece of twine
  • sandpaper
  • Waverly chalk paint, color plaster
  • Waverly antique wax
  • Mod Podge
  • Glue gun

The first step for this project was to sand the glitter from the letters on the Easter sign; I wanted a smooth surface to work with. So many of the DT signs have glitter on them which makes it a little difficult if you’re trying to do a make over project.

When I was finished sanding, I gave the sign a coat of off-white paint. I wasn’t sure if the design would show through on the finished piece but I wasn’t going to take any chances.

While the paint was drying, I moved on to the nativity set. Using the Waverly antique wax, I painted the stable, Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. I did not use the three wise men or the base.

I also brush a little of the antique wax around the perimeter of the sign.

For the next step, I applied a liberal coat of Mod Podge to the sign and place the hymn page in place. It was slightly smaller than the sign, so I centered it as best as I could and smoothed out any wrinkles.

I found a free printable for the hymn Away in a Manger along with other Christmas music pages from The Knick of Time.

Then I hot glued the nativity scene to the sign after the hymn page had dried.

The final step was to wrap some twine around the base, and then glue a small bow and a few embellishment to the top.
And I just LOVE how this turned out! So simple but still so beautiful. I really do like using hymn pages for decor pieces like this one.

I hope you were inspired by this idea and will give it a try. It really was an EASY project once I got going on it!

Until next time.

Happy Crafting!
and
Merry Christmas!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
