Dollar Tree Valentine Sign Makeover

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Dollar Tree Valentine Sign Makeover

Hello Sweet Friends,

For today’s DIY project, I will be making over a Dollar Tree Valentine sign. There wasn’t really anything wrong with the original sign. It was just sort of meh, and begging for a fresh look. So that’s just what I did.

I liked the ombre look of the original sign, so I kept that theme going. It was a lot of fun just using supplies that I already had on hand. (Of course, my craft stash is a little out of hand, so I like to use what I already have instead of purchasing new supplies.)

If you would like to create something similar, gather around my crafting table, and follow along for the EASY instructions.

Supplies needed

  • Dollar Tree Valentine sign
  • 4 different pages of card stock
  • various ribbons, lace, florals, other embellishments
  • brown paper tag, optional
  • twine for hanger
  • pen or pencil
  • scissors
  • Mod Podge and small brush
  • glue gun

The first step for this makeover project was to trace and cut a piece of card stock for each section of the heart.

I started with the lightest color at the top of the heart, and each section got darker towards the bottom, creating an ombre effect.

Using Mod Podge, I attached the card stock cut-outs to the sign, and allowed it to dry before going on.

Now it was time to embellish the heart sign. So I added pieces of burlap ribbon and lace ribbon (both from Dollar Tree) using a hot glue gun, and just kept adding until I like the way it looked.

Next, I tied a messy bow of lace ribbon and glued in the middle of the heart sign. Then added some faux white roses and lace streamers. (Can you believe the roses were at Dollar Tree in with the Halloween items?)

A little brown paper tag with the word “love” printed on it was the finishing touch.

And I have to say I just LOVE how this project turned out! Doesn’t this heart sign LOOK so much better? Super-duper CUTE!

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
