Hello Friends,
I’m very excited today to bring you an easy DIY for your yard this summer! With just a few items, mostly from the Dollar Tree, you too can make one of these beautiful garden solar flowers. They are perfect for your yard, front porch, or back patio!
Without any delay, let’s get started.
Items you will need for your DIY solar flower
- solar stake light from Dollar Tree
- 2-pack of cookie sheets from Dollar Tree
- spray paint, your choice of color
- black electrical tape
- scissors
- twine, optional; also glue gun if using twine
You will first want to cut your flower “petals” from the cookie sheets, leaving a narrow section at the base. You should be able to get three or four petals from each cookie sheet, depending on the size and shape. See picture for an example.
I cut out eight petals for my flower but ended up only using seven. Honestly, I believe as few as five or six petals would make a pretty flower. Anyway, the next step is to paint the petals the color of your choice. Be sure to paint outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. I chose an off-white color because I thought the light color would show up better at night with the solar light. But you could use any color you like.
You will need to make two cuts in the base of each petal, creating three separate sections. This can be done before or after painting them.
Next, you will be attaching the petals to the base of the light on your solar stake light. Attach the petals one at a time by taping with black electrical tape. When attaching the first petal, the center section at the base will be taped straight down the stake. The two side pieces will be bent around the sides of the stake before taping down. This helps give the petal support and you will be able to bend the petal outward. Once you get one of the “petals” attached, you will understand what I mean by this. I originally tried to attach the petals with a glue gun but this did not work; the glue kept popping loose.
I attached the second petal across from the first, using the same process. And then kept alternating sides, until I was finished.
I was almost finished at this point. It’s already looking beautiful!
I decided to wrap twine around the base to cover all of the black electrical tape because it looked a little messy. It is optional to do this step, because the base of the flower does not really show at all when it is displayed outside but I just wanted it to have a more finished look. I also accented the petals with few streaks with white chalk paint; this is also optional.
Ready to be displayed in the yard!
I was just so pleased with how this DIY looks, I couldn’t wait to share it with you! You could try different shapes for the petals, or different colors; the sky is the limit! I hope I’ve inspired you to make one (or many) for yourself. Let me know what you think!
Happy Summer
and
Happy Crafting!
