Hello Sweet Friends,
Are you ready for a Thanksgiving DIY? Then today’s idea is for you! It is an easy Dollar Tree turkey craft.
You know how Dollar Tree has wooden cut-outs for just about every season/holiday? Well I recently purchased a turkey shape and wanted to craft with it. I know sometimes Thanksgiving gets overlooked as holiday that you decorate your home for; it seems like after October 31, all of the Christmas decorations come out! But I like to have a few Thanksgiving decor pieces out in my home.
Follow along as I show you how to create this lovely Thanksgiving turkey decor. I hope you like it as much as I do!
Supply list
- Dollar Tree wooden turkey cut-out
- three packages of paint sticks (from Walmart)
- metal word Thankful (from Dollar Tree)
- ribbon and fall embellishment
- saw to cut the paint sticks
- E6000 glue
- hot glue gun
- white paint
- brown paint
- paint brush
- Mod Podge
I found the long paint sticks at the local Walmart; they come in a 3-pack for $1.27. To see how many I needed to use for this turkey sign, I laid them out and placed the turkey shape on top.
Nine paint sticks seemed to be the right amount, so I had my hubby cut them down a little bit. I saved the cut off pieces to used on the back for stability.
I used E6000 and hot glue to secure the paint stick pieces together. Below is what the back side of the sign looked like after I glued.
Then I turned the sign over and painted it with my Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster, a nice off-white. It took two coats of paint with dry time in between.
While the paint was drying on the sign, I painted the turkey brown. I used my Waverly antique wax in place of paint, but I thought it looked just as good. Again, it took two coats with dry time in between.
The metal word Thankful also came from Dollar Tree. It came in a pack of three fall words: Harvest, Welcome, and Thankful. I’ve had it in my craft stash for a while now and I’m so glad to finally use it.
Using my Waverly chalk paint, I gave the metal word two coats of paint, then topped with a coating of Mod Podge.
Now that everything was painted, I was ready to start assembling. First, I glued the word Thankful on the turkey using E6000 and hot glue. I used both very sparingly so the glue would not squeeze out from behind the word.
Again, using the E6000 and hot glue, I applied a liberal amount on the back of the turkey and place it onto the sign. Look how great it already LOOKS!
All that was left to do, was to embellish the sign with some ribbon and a few faux fall foliages. I made a messy bow with ribbon and fabric, securing it with wire.
Then I glued the bow and a few accessories to the sign. And my project was finished. How stinkin’ CUTE! I had so much FUN creating this.
Let’s talk TURKEY!
I really do LOVE how this turned out! And I hope you like it as MUCH as I do. Hopefully I’ve inspired you to create something similar for your home.
Until next time….
Happy Crafting!
