Hello Sweet Friends,
Today, I’m will be showing you Halloween DIY topiary tree using a Dollar Tree plunger. Seriously, who would think you could use a toilet plunger for a topiary tree? But that’s just what I did. You can also see a fall topiary DIY using a plunger here.
Follow along and I’ll show you how you can easily make one too!
Items needed for Halloween Topiary Tree
- metal bucket container
- rocks or pebbles
- toilet plunger
- floral foam and foam ball
- assorted black Halloween florals and leaves
- sparkle twig stems
- two rolls of Halloween netting(tulle)
- 3-pack of Halloween necklaces
- owl figurine
- 4-pack of purple pumpkins
- black spray paint
- black chalk paint (optional)
- mod podge and purple glitter
- scissors, knife, wire cutters, glue gun
- purple LED light set with 2 AA batteries (optional)

The first step in making the Halloween Topiary was to paint the plunger, foam ball, and owl with black spray paint.

I also dry brushed some black chalk paint onto the bucket. This step is optional.

I was going to leave the bucket as is, but in the end decided it needed a little distressing with black paint.

Then I weighted the bucket down with some stones.

The next step was to cut the floral foam down to size, using a knife with a serrated edge.

After wedging the foam into the bucket, I helped secure it with extra pieces of foam and hot glue around the sides. Then I inserted the end of the toilet plunger into the foam. I had cut off the outer edge of the plunger ahead of time. After the plunger was in place, I glued the foam ball onto the plunger with plenty of hot glue.

Using wire cutters I separated the black roses into individual stems and placed them as equally as possible around foam topiary ball. I cut them fairly short, maybe three to four inch stems.

Next I made netting poufs for the topiary by cutting two 10-12 inch lengths of spiderweb netting and securing it in the middle with half of a pipe cleaner.

I used a whole roll of purple spiderweb netting and a whole roll of orange spiderweb netting to make the poufs. I used most of them in the top of the topiary but saved back a few poufs for the base. I secured them to the top with glue.

Then I cut the sparkly sticks into individual stems and added them to the topiary, saving back a few stems for the base. The spider stems you see in the picture were came with the stems of roses.

The next thing I added was the halloween necklaces. I cut each necklace into two strands and attached them together with a pipe cleaner. I made sure the strands were slightly uneven when I glued them to the underneath of the topiary ball.

I also added some black leaves to the pot.

At this point, I needed to work on the owl a little bit more. I had painted it black but I wanted to add some purple glitter to make it stand out a little bit more. I painted it with a little Mod Podge in specific places and sprinkled on the glitter!

I had to glue a dowel rod into the bottom of the owl so it would stand upright in the base of the topiary tree. I added the spiderweb netting that I had reserved for the base, too.

Nearly finished now. I glued in the purple pumpkins and added the sparkly sticks into the base, spreading them out as evenly as possible.

I’m loving the look! How about you? I just thought it needed a little something EXTRA! And that would be lights, of course.

Two AA batteries for the lights were necessary.

WOWZA! How cute is this topiary? Black roses, spiders, pumpkins, dangling skeletons, eyeballs, spiderwebs, an owl; all kinds of Halloween spookiness! Wouldn’t this be such spooky fun to add to your Halloween decor this year? I hope I’ve inspired you to make one for yourself.
Spooky Crafting Wishes to you!
