Heart Quote Canvas DIY

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Heart Quote Canvas DIY

Hello Sweet Friends,
The DIY project I have for you today, began as an idea for a Valentines Day craft. I had seen the quote “Bind my wandering heart to thee” and just thought it was such beautiful wording. With a little research, I discovered it is actually a quote from the hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, written in 1758. So it’s not actually a Valentine quote, but beautiful, nonetheless. Anyway, I found some fonts that I liked and printed the quote onto paper to create this project. I really love how this project turned out and I hope you do too. Follow along and I’ll show you how I created it!

Supplies needed for Heart Quote Canvas

  • 8 X 10 canvas – got mine from Dollar Tree
  • quote printed on standard size paper 8 1/2 X 11
  • heart doily
  • Mod Podge
  • brown paint
  • parchment paper
  • small iron
  • sanding block/sponge
  • embellishment, optional

As you can see the sheet of paper is slightly translucent, so I hoped that whatever I painted onto the canvas would show through, but that’s not exactly what happened. I started by using a heart doily and brown paint, then stenciled a heart image onto the canvas. When it was dry, I add a liberal coat of Mod Podge and let that dry.

I also “aged” the paper with the quote by dry brushing the brown paint onto it. When both the canvas and paper were dry, I used the small iron and a piece of parchment paper, to seal the quote page onto the canvas.

As you can see, the heart image did not show through like I thought it would, so with the brown paint I lightly stenciled another heart again using a heart doily.

Next, I trimmed the excess paper and sanded the edges with a sanding block/sponge. I thought it still needed a little something extra, so I glued a shabby flower onto the canvas. (I’ll have a DIY for the shabby flower soon and will link here)

Even though I hit a few bumps along the way, I just LOVE how this project turned out. I will probably display it year-round.

I hope I’ve inspired you to try this technique to create a canvas of your favorite quote. It’s really easy!

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
