How to Create a Framed Farmhouse Display Board

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / How to Create a Framed Farmhouse Display Board

Hello Craftsy Soul Sisters,

Today I’m featuring a DIY framed farmhouse display board that you can easily recreate for your home. The frame that I am using, you might remember from a previous DIY. I bought the frame from a Goodwill outlet store for very little because it was a very sturdy and I LOVED the way it looked. The only other purchase I made was for some large paint sticks from Lowe’s. This DIY project in itself might seem a little bit plain, but it is so useful and versatile for displaying many different things including some of my other DIY projects. I’ll show you some examples at the end of the post.

So gather around the crafting table and SEE just how easy and budget-friendly it is to create this project!

Supply List

  • Large picture frame, approx. 18″ X 20″
  • 10 pack of large paint stir sticks, approx. 21” long
  • saw
  • pencil, ruler
  • Waverly chalk paint, plaster
  • Waverly antique wax
  • paint brush
  • glue gun optional

Pictured above is how the original Goodwill frame looked. The frame was already cleaned up and lightly brushed with some Waverly antique wax from a previous project.

The first step for the DIY framed display board was to cut the paint stir sticks to the correct length. I had to have a little help with cutting the sticks down to size. Hubby and I measured to size and marked with a pencil before cutting. After making sure it fit into the frame, then moved onto the next.

It took nine out of the ten paint sticks to fill the frame.

Once the sticks were all cut, I decided to “whitewash” them with some Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster. I just watered down the paint a little and brushed it on. The paint sticks had ruler markings on one side and were plain on the other side. So I made sure to paint the plain side of the sticks.

After the paint had dried, I re-assembled the frame with the paint sticks. I was going to glue the sticks in place, but in the end I decided to just replace the back of the frame to keep the paint sticks secure.

How CUTE did this project turn out? I just LOVE the faux shiplap look of it! I feel like it makes the perfect background for almost any decor piece. Here are a few more ideas!

WOW! Anything looks FAB in this frame! The paper bag star DIY can be found here.

I’ve added it to a gallery wall at my home. Check out these pictures!

I will be changing it out for every season. Or I might hang a framed photograph on it. So many ideas; the sky is the limit really!

I hope you’ve found this DIY idea useful and will try to create something similar for your home.

Until next time……

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
