Let’s Create a Hanging Basket of Faux Greenery

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Let’s Create a Hanging Basket of Faux Greenery

Hello Sweet Friends,

For today’s DIY project, I will be showing you how to create a beautiful hanging basket of faux greenery. And to make things even sweeter, all of the faux greenery used in the hanging basket was purchased at Dollar Tree. How COOL is that?

If you haven’t checked out the faux greenery at Dollar Tree lately, you really should. There are so MANY different types of greenery, vines, and grasses, it’s was a little difficult to decide which ones to use for this project.

I hope that you’ll find that this is a fairly quick and easy project to put together. Follow along for the instructions and a supply list.

Supplies needed

  • hanging basket, I got mine on clearance at Dollar General
  • floral foam, from Dollar Tree
  • package of pebbles or stones, for weight, optional
  • various bundles of faux greenery from Dollar Tree, I used 9 different bundles
  • knife to cut foam
  • hot glue gun
  • wire cutters

As I mentioned earlier, I got the hanging basket from Dollar Tree, but I have seen this style of basket at other places. Or you could use any type of pot; it wouldn’t necessarily have to be hanging. If you’re having trouble finding this style of hanging basket, here is my Amazon affiliate link for similar baskets at a good price, https://amzn.to/3vZuvzk

The first step in this project was to get the foam into the basket. I started by cutting the foam in half and glueing the two pieces into the basket. Then added a package of pebbles to add a little weight. This step is optional.

One of the foliage bundles I bought was a large leaves. After I cut a little off of the stem with wire cutters, I added it right into the center of the basket.

Next, I added two separate fern bundles. After fluffing out each fern and trimming each stem, I placed them on opposite sides of the basket.

Here’s how the progress looks so far. (Sorry for the poor quality photo)

The next bundles I used looked like asparagus fern or sprengeri, so that’s what I’ll call it. I separated the asparagus fern into individual stems before placing them into the hanging basket. I tried to fill in any gaps that were in the basket.

Isn’t the hanging basket looking GREAT so far? But of course, I never know when to stop, so I just kept adding more. So, next I added two bundles of eucalyptus. Like with the asparagus fern, I cut them into individual stems before adding to the basket.

It looks finished but I decided to add a few more stems.

The final two bundles I added to the basket were smaller ferns, like maidenhair fern. I kept the small fern bundles intact, but cut some off of the main stem before placing in the basket.

And LOOK how beautiful this hanging basket of faux greenery turned out!!! I just can hardly believe how realistic it looks. And the BEST part of all: no watering required.

I can’t decide where to hang it, so I tried a few places.

I hope I’ve inspired you to create something similar for your home. It really was quick to put together. A helpful hint to remember is to choose greenery of various sizes and shades of green; it will make for a more realistic look in the finished project.

Until next time….. Happy Crafting!

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
