Hello Sweet Friends,
For today’s craft, we will create flowers using cupcake liners. To be more specific, we will create faux peppermint carnations using peppermint cupcake lines.
When I saw the peppermint cupcake liners at Walmart, I knew exactly what I wanted to make with them. You may remember, in a previous post, I used fiesta colored cupcake liners to create flowers. So I used a similar process to create the peppermint carnations.
For many years, I would see fresh peppermint carnations at the florist I worked for, but only around Christmastime. So I thought this would be a perfect budget-friendly DIY for this time of year.
Follow along and I will show you just how EASY it is to create these beauties.
Supply list
- cupcake liners, 8 for each flower
- slim skewer
- red and white striped straw
- scissors
- pinking shears or scrapbook scissors
- glue gun
I purchased two different packages of cupcake liners, one from Michael’s and one from Walmart. When I opened the packages, I realized that the liners from Michaels were heavier and had a grease-resistant design. So they were more difficult to work with. The Walmart ones were simply paper, so this tutorial will mainly focus on them. Although I do have a photo I’ll show at the end, of a few flowers that I created with the Michaels cupcake liners
I began by counting out eight cupcake liners and flattened them out in a stack.
The next step was to fold the stack of cupcake liners in half, and then in half again.
Then I cut four cuts from the outer rounded edge toward the point, one cut through all the layers at each side and two in between. Each cut should be about a half inch or so.
When the stack of cupcake liners is unfolded, there should be a total of twelve cuts around the perimeter. Honestly, you skip the folding and just eyeball it and make the cuts if you wanted.
Then I took a pair of scrapbook scissors and cut around the outer edge. Doing this gives a ruffled edge to the carnation. You could also use pinking shears, I just happened to have the scrapbook scissors from several years ago.
For the next step, I poked holes in the center of each cupcake line using the pointy end of a skewer.
To create the carnation, I started with one of the cupcake liners and a skewer. I poked the pointy end of the skewer through the middle of the cupcake liner, added a little bit of hot glue, then gathered and pinched the cupcake liner around the tip of the skewer.
Then I added the second cupcake liner, adding it to the bottom the skewer and sliding up to the first liner. (This is where the pre-made holes come in handy).
I added some glue to the base of the first cupcake liner, then gathered and smooshed the second liner to the first. You can see how the carnation is already taking shape.
So I just continued adding the cupcake liners, one at a time, glueing and smooshing together, until all 8 liners were together. I fluffed out the top of the carnation as I went.
And here is a picture of the flower all together. I was happy with how nice a fluffy and full the carnation looks.
Now this next step is really optional: I chose to give the stem a little pizzazz by adding a red and white striped straw. I simply put a touch of hot glue at the base of the flower and slid the straw onto the stem. Then cut the stem to size.
Oh my gosh, I just LOVE how this turned out! Such a fun idea and so CUTE to decorate with!
I just kept creating until I had a whole bouquet of peppermint carnations! I was able to make 6 from the 50 pack of cupcake liners; so budget-friendly! LOOK how beautiful they are!
And since I had already purchased the cupcake liners from Michael’s, I decided to try making carnations with them too. It was a little more difficult and I only used 4 liners instead of 8, but here is the result. I even used the “peppermint confetti” in the vase! (I try not to be wasteful).
If you are looking for some peppermint cupcake liners, I found some really COOL ones on Amazon, here is my affiliate link: https://amzn.to/3RSsHjy
I hope you have enjoyed this craft and are inspired to give it a try! You can use any color cupcake liners, so the sky is the limit on this DIY idea! It is definitely not limited to Christmastime.
Until next time.
Happy Crafting!
