Let’s Make a Spindle Birdhouse

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Let’s Make a Spindle Birdhouse

Hello Sweet Friends,

Today, I will be sharing a super EASY and super CUTE craft idea; a spindle birdhouse. When I first came up with this idea, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. And I have to say, I think it exceeded my expectations by quite a lot.

Another thing that I like about this DIY is the versatility; it can easily be switched up to match any decor. And it can be made with a minimal amount of supplies. So without further delay, let’s get into it.

Supply list

  • one long spindle
  • one small wooden birdhouse
  • Dollar Tree wall tile
  • white chalk paint
  • antique wax
  • glue gun
  • E6000
  • ribbon and other embellishments

If you are interested, here is my Amazon affiliate link for 12 birdhouses for only a little over $1 each. https://amzn.to/3xeZ1G5 They actually look like the same ones that Michael’s has.

I got this birdhouse from Michael’s for 99¢, but I have found them at other craft stores for about the same price. Before doing anything else, I cut off the rope hanger.
Then I cut squares of the DT ceiling tiles and hot glued them onto the roof of the birdhouse. I had the pieces of ceiling tile left over from a previous project, and they were the perfect size.

It was now time to get out the Waverly chalk paint (in the color plaster) and paint the birdhouse. It took two coats with dry time in between.

My apologies for the poor quality photo but this photo shows how the roof looks with a little more detail. The edges are not perfect, but in the end I think it gives it a more rustic look.
Then I also painted the spindle. Sorry I didn’t get a before photo.

Let’s work on the spindle

Again, it took two coats of paint with dry time in between.
Also, I forgot to mention that the spindle had to be cut off level before I began; I enlisted the help of my husband for this.
After all of the paint had dried, I glued the birdhouse directly to the top of the spindle with a combination of hot glue and E6000.

I let this dry in an upright position overnight before I went any further.
After drying, I brushed the entire thing with a little Waverly antique wax. Don’t you just love how the antique wax gives just about anything a lovely rustic/vintage look?

Adding the final touches on the spindle birdhouse

A little twine bow and a few accessories later, and I had myself a super cute spindle birdhouse!
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe how stinking CUTE this turned out!

This little project is just so easy to recreate and could be decorated in any color or for any season.
I hope I’ve given you inspiration to get creative and make something similar for you home.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
