Let’s Make an American Flag Canvas

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Let’s Make an American Flag Canvas

Hello Sweet Friends,

For today’s craft idea, I will be showing you how to make an American flag canvas using various red, white, and blue ribbons, and a small Dollar Tree canvas. This is one of those crafts that I just used what I already had on hand. I tend to collect different ribbons; when I see some that I really like or it’s a good price, I will buy it. Same with the DT canvases. I keep several on hand at all times.

I wanted to create something with a patriotic-theme that could be used for home decor for Memorial Day, July 4th, or all summer. And this little project fits the bill. It’s SUPER easy to put together once you have gathered all of your supplies. So follow along and I’ll give you step-by-step instructions to create one of your very own.

Supply list

  • 5 X 7 stretched canvas from Dollar Tree (or use any size you like)
  • various red, white, and blue ribbons/fabrics/ricrac
  • buttons
  • scissors
  • glue gun

Let’s Get Started

The first order of business was to cut pieces of ribbon and fabric to the desired lengths. So, to start with, I will have to tell you that I did not measure any of the ribbon or fabric. All I did was hold it up to the canvas and cut a few inches longer than I thought I would need. Then I arranged them onto the canvas without glueing them.

Most of the ribbon is from Walmart; and the rest is from Michael’s and Dollar Tree. You can see in the photo above that there will be enough ribbon to wrap around the edge of the canvas.

Starting with the blue ribbon pieces, I began to glue them onto the canvas. The outside edges were wrapped around and glued onto the back.

Then I had a few piece of neutral cloth that I ripped that I added next. This was to give the flag a rustic, vintage look. I just glued them on in random places, knowing that I would be adding other ribbons on top of them. The edges were also wrapped around and glued onto the back.

Next up was to add the red and white “stripes”. I just glued them onto the canvas in a pleasing pattern. And again, I made sure to wrap the edges around onto the back and secure them with glue.

You can already see the flag taking shape. Just a little more embellishment and it will be complete. I just love how it looks; it reminds me of patchwork a little bit.

The final step was to add the buttons (stars). I simply glued them onto the blue part of the flag and the project was finished!

Wowza! Didn’t this American flag canvas turn out super CUTE? And I can’t believe how EASY it was to make. Take a LOOK at how good it looks in a patriotic vignette.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
