Let’s Make Over a Dollar Tree Valentine Sign

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Let’s Make Over a Dollar Tree Valentine Sign

Hello Sweet Friends,
It’s been a while since my last post, but I hope this Valentine DIY idea will be worth the wait for you. For today’s craft idea, I will be showing you how to make over a Dollar Tree Valentine sign. The sign is cute on it’s own, but you know I can’t just leave well enough alone. So, of course, I had to add jazz it up a little bit.

With a few extra supplies from Dollar Tree, I will take this sign from simple to simply GORGEOUS! So follow along as I show you with EASY step-by step-instructions.

Supplies needed

  • Dollar Tree sign
  • white paint and paint brush
  • brown paint
  • Dollar Tree floral stems
  • ribbon and other embellishments
  • Scrabble tiles spelling L-O-V-E
  • glue gun
  • wire cutters

The first step for this makeover was to get out my handy Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster. It’s really more of an off-white and I use it in many of my DIY’s; but really any white acrylic paint would be fine.

Before I started painting, I removed the paper heart from the envelope. I knew the small piece that was still stuck on the envelope would be covered, so I just did the best I could to remove as much as possible. Then I painted the entire envelope with two coats of paint with dry time in between.

Here’s what it looked like after two coats.

For the next step, I painted some lines on the envelope to hopefully make it look more realistic. I used Waverly antique wax, but any brown acrylic would work. Some extra brown around the edges of the envelope completed the look.

Now for my favorite part, it was time to add the florals. I think a few florals just make anything look better! All of these were found at Dollar Tree.

The rose and the carnation blossoms were removed from the stems. The little lavender flower had to be snipped with wire cutters. Starting with the roses and carnations, I began gluing the flowers to look like they were flowing out of the envelope.

Faux foliage, lavender, and babies breath were added next. And then a few sparkly pink hearts from Dollar Tree were added. It’s really starting to look pretty. Take a LOOK below.

Wouldn’t this look cute on a shelf or hanging on a mirror or window? Even for those who really do not decorate for Valentines Day, this would be a cute little decor piece. Different colored flowers could be used to match your decor and it could be used year-round.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
