Let’s Make Patriotic Decor using a July Calendar Image

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Let’s Make Patriotic Decor using a July Calendar Image

Hello Sweet Friends,

For today’s DIY idea, I will be showing you how to create patriotic decor using a July calendar image from Jennifer Pugh’s 2024 Seasons of Joy calendar. If you have been following me for very long, you already know that I love using calendar images in many of my craft projects.

If you are ready to show off your red, white, and blue, this is the craft project for you. It was easy, very budget-friendly, and fairly quick to create. Sort of a crafting TRIFECTA! In addition to that, it is super CUTE!

So follow along for a supply list and simple instructions to create this beauty.

Supply List

  • 10 x 12 blank wooden sign (I got mine at Wal-mart)
  • July calendar image
  • scissors
  • paint brush
  • Mod Podge
  • Waverly chalk paint, color plaster
  • various ribbons and other embellishment
  • glue gun
  • small crafting iron and parchment paper

Let’s get to Crafting

The first step in this project was to cut the calendar image to size. I just centered the image onto the blank sign and trimmed on either side of it as well as a little off of the top and bottom.

Adding a coat of Mod Podge to the sign was the next step. Then it was allowed to dry before moving on.

Using a small crafting iron and a piece of parchment paper, I applied the calendar image to the sign. The heat from the iron softened the Mod Podge enough, so the July calendar image adhered to the sign.

At this point, I decided that I should add some white paint around the outside edges of the sign. I dry brushed the paint to give it a whitewash look.

Create a Messy Bow to Embellish the Patriotic Decor

Adding embellishments was the final step for this DIY project. I made a messy bow using various red, white, and blue ribbons/fabrics; cutting them into short lengths and stacking them together.

After tying the stack of ribbons together in the center, I glue it to the top of the sign. A few pieces of greenery and buttons were added to finish the project.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
