Hello Craftsy Soul Sisters,
I’m changing it up a little with this post. For our DIY project today, we’ll be making snickerdoodles. What’s a snickerdoodle? you ask. A snickerdoodle is a crinkly-topped cinnamon and sugar cookie that is pure yumminess. And if you haven’t ever tried one, you SHOULD. Around the holidays my mom has always baked all different kinds of cookies from scratch. And the snickerdoodle is one of my favorites. After I grew up I would still bake them for my family using her recipe. It seems to be one of their faves too.
The recipe my mom uses was handed down from her mother and I still use it. It may have even come from my great grandmother. I know she still has a recipe box fill with old recipes, many in my grandmothers handwriting and some in my great grandmothers handwriting. I’m the first one to google for recipes online but there’s something really nostalgic about using recipe cards from a recipe box that recalls simpler times. So sometimes I still get my snickerdoodle recipe card out and make cookies from scratch.
Follow along and I’ll share my recipe and instructions to make these yummy snickerdoodles.
SNICKERDOODLES
Mix: 1 cup shortening (part butter)
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
Sift and add: 2 3/4 cups of flour
2 tsp cream-of-tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours or overnight.
Roll into small balls. Then roll in mixture of 2 Tbsp sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon. Place on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet and allow to cool on a cooling rack.
You have just baked snickerdoodles from scratch.
Enjoy!
I hope I’ve inspired you to bake your favorite cookies from scratch and maybe to start keeping your recipes in a recipe box just like in days past.
Until next time,
Happy Baking!
