Let’s Makeover Some Thanksgiving Pilgrims

You are here: Home / Autumn / Let’s Makeover Some Thanksgiving Pilgrims

Hello Sweet Friends,

I’ve got a GREAT DIY project for you today. I will show you how I made over some old Thanksgiving decor. These pilgrim figurines have been in my possession for probably twenty years now, and I haven’t used them in recent years at all.

Instead of getting rid of them, I thought I could breath some new life into them by giving them a makeover. So that’s just what I did. And boy did they turn out CUTE! I’ll be displaying them this Thanksgiving for sure.

So without further delay, let’s makeover some Thanksgiving Pilgrims.

Supplies needed

  • Pilgrim figurines
  • Waverly chalk paint, color – plaster
  • Waverly antique wax
  • small paint brush
  • paper towels

This DIY is just so EASY! The first step is to paint the entire surface of the figurine with the white chalk paint. I chose chalk paint because it adheres well to just about any surface without prepping. (I usually get my Waverly chalk paint at Walmart.)

Getting the paint into all of those nooks and crannies took a little time and effort, but it was worth it. It took two coats of paint for good coverage with dry time in between.

After the paint had dried, I thought they look pretty GOOD!

But I thought they would look even BETTER with a touch of the antique wax. So I dipped the paint brush into the antique wax and blotted it before applying it to the figurines.

Then I dry brushed the wax onto the figurine, wiping with a paper towel before it could dry to blend it in.

I continued applying the antique wax, doing small areas at a time, until both figurines were finished.

This project was just so EASY! And I can’t tell you how PLEASED I am with how they turned out. I mean, doesn’t nearly everything look better with a fresh coat of white paint? I say YES!

I know many people will go straight from Halloween to Christmas decorations. But I still like to have a few Thanksgiving pieces in my home, even though I might have my Christmas tree up in the next room.

How about you? Do you decorate your home for Thanksgiving? Let me know.

I hope I’ve inspired you with this easy makeover project. Maybe you will give it a try with some other type of figurine. It really is an easy way to upgrade an old piece.

The chalkboard above was also a DIY, more about that here if you are interested.

Until next time….

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
