Hello Sweet Friends,
I’m sure you will be over the MOON with today’s DIY, where I show you how to take an item from Dollar Tree and transform it into decor for your moon garden with one simple instruction: paint it white. Of course, an item from another store, or something that you already own could be used, but for the purposes of this DIY, I will be using items from Dollar Tree.
If you want to know more about moon gardens, check out my post, Create the Perfect Moon Garden. In that post, I explain what a moon garden is, have links to experts on moon gardening, and also show a few examples of moon garden decor. But of course, I couldn’t stop there, I wanted to share more DIY decor pieces that would be perfect for a moon garden.
So follow along as I show you this EASY and budget-friendly idea. Gather your supplies and let’s get going.
Supply list
- Dollar Tree yard stake
- white spray paint
- iridescent glitter
- Mod Podge
For the first step you will need to paint the star with spray paint outside, following the directions on the can. I chose this Rustoleum spray paint with primer in an off-white color. It took two coats with dry time in between.
I thought the stars needed a little EXTRA, so I added some iridescent glitter using Mod Podge. Once it had dried, I added a top coat of Mod Podge to seal it. (If you are interested, here is the affiliate link for the glitter that I used for this project – https://amzn.to/45y54Cl)
It’s a little difficult to see in the above photo, but the glitter adds just a little bit of sparkle in any light; sunlight, moon light, or artificial light.
Wow! What an easy project. And LOOK how good the stars look in my patio moon garden. They sort of go along with the celestial theme, too.
This project turned out so well, that I decided to paint a few more things for the patio. (If you’re interested in the solar water fountain, here is my affiliate link – https://amzn.to/3Vhd6uz)
A few more things to transform for the moon garden
These yard decor pieces were also from Dollar Tree. There really isn’t anything wrong with them; I just wanted to make them more suitable for the moon garden. Read on to see the transformation.
Just like with the stars, I painted these three items with off-white spray paint, then added some iridescent glitter.
I can hardly believe how CUTE they all turned out! Especially the large white flower! They all look so pretty and sparkly in the sunlight, although it’s really hard to tell in the photos.
One final project to paint white
I’ve had these two finials made of resin for years. They were a verdigris green color to begin with, but faded in the sun after many years. I actually thought about throwing them away at one point. But I’m sure glad I kept them, because they were PERFECT for this DIY.
After cleaning them, I used off white chalk paint instead of the spray paint. I did not add glitter, but instead I touched them up with a little Waverly antique wax.
LOOK how nice the two transformed finials on my back patio table. I just might have to eventually use them for decor inside the house instead!
I hope you have enjoyed this quick, easy, and budget-friendly DIY.
If you have been putting off that makeover project, because you weren’t exactly sure what you wanted to do with it; just remember this simple idea. Paint it white. Seriously, you cannot go wrong.
Until next time…… Happy Crafting!
