Popcorn Tin Makeover using a Calendar Page

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Popcorn Tin Makeover using a Calendar Page

Hello Sweet Friends,

The featured DIY project for today is a popcorn tin makeover using a calendar page. As I have been working my way through Jennifer Pugh’s 2023 Seasons of Joy calendar, I find myself at the August image, a beautiful sunflower image.

As you might remember, I also did a popcorn tin makeover with the July image, a lovely patriotic design. (Check it out here.) Even though I intended to have twelve unique and different craft projects from this calendar, I decided to do a repeat of last month’s idea. A deciding factor for this was that I have some DIY sunflowers that I intended on adding to this project. (Find the DIY sunflowers here.) I’m sure you will understand when you see the final piece!

So follow along as I quickly transform an old popcorn tin into a beautiful sunflower decor piece.

Supply list

  • popcorn tin
  • white spray paint
  • calendar page
  • scissors
  • Mod Podge and brush
  • small iron and parchment paper, optional

The first step was to paint the popcorn tin with white paint. I chose white because the background color of the calendar page that I was using was an off-white color. I set the lid aside and painted the tin outdoors, following the instructions on the paint can.

The calendar page needed to be trimmed down slightly in order for it to fit on the tin. After it was trimmed, I applied a liberal amount of Mod Podge to one side of the popcorn tin. Then I pressed the image onto the tin, keeping it as straight as possible. A top coat of Mod Podge was applied, then allowed to dry.

There were a few wrinkles in the image after it dried. To help smooth them out, I used a small iron with parchment paper between it and the tin. I used a pot holder with my free hand so I would not get burned. It was a little awkward to do this, but it really did help smooth out the wrinkles.

The project was pretty much complete except for adding the DIY sunflowers to the tin. To do this, I added some floral foam, moss, and faux greenery to the sunflower tin.

Once I added the SUNFLOWERS to the tin, I was in LOVE! How pretty did this turn out?

I hope you have found this INSPIRING! Why not give it a try?

Until next time….

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
