Hello Sweet Friends,
It’s THAT time of year when the Christmas decor is put away and I’m not sure to whether to keep a few winter decorations out or maybe add a few pieces of Valentine decor. My solution seems to be to add in a little NEUTRAL Valentines decor. So the DIY project I’m sharing today is just THAT: neutral Valentines decor.
I SCORED this awesome pompom garland when shopping at the local Walmart in the Christmas clearance section of the store. All Christmas was 90% off, bringing this item to a grand total of $1. How AWESOME is that?
So I came up with two Valentine DIY decor projects to create from this one garland. Every other supply I used was already on hand, so this really ended up being a very BUDGET-FRIENDLY project for me! Yay!

Follow along to see what TWO items I created from one Christmas clearance pompom garland.
Supply list
- pompom garland 6 ft
- 16 x 20 burlap canvas
- pattern for word “love”
- pen
- scissors
- glue gun
- nine wooden skewers/kabob sticks of varying lengths
The first step for this project was removing the nine pompoms from the garland. I carefully snipped them off with scissors so as not to cut the actual braided garland. They were set aside for the second part of this two-part project.

For the first part of this project, I found a 16 x 20 burlap canvas in my craft stash. When I bought it several years ago, I wasn’t sure what I would use is for. To say is has worked out PERFECTLY for this project would be an understatement.
I needed a pattern/template of the word “love” to be transferred onto to canvas. So I printed it up in large print using the font Mermaid. Transferring the word to the canvas posed quite a challenge; I wished I had some “old school” carbon paper. Anyway, using an ink pen, I just went over and over the letters until some of the ink went through the paper, leaving subtle impression of the word “love”. I suppose I could have just written the word freehand but I was not confident in my writing skills.

Leaving enough length to wrap around to the back side of the canvas, I began to glue short sections of the braided garland onto the canvas. I continued gluing, following the word lines until the word was complete Then both ends of the garland were glued around the edge of the canvas and onto the back side.

The six foot garland ended up being the exact length I needed, so there was no need to trim the ends. Yay, I love it when things work out like that!
I just LOVE how this sign turned out! Now onto the second half of this project.
I gathered up nine wooden skewers/kabob sticks of varying lengths and simply glued the pompoms onto the skewers and BOOM! I had myself some super EASY pompom flowers! (Some loose pieces of twine/thread had to be trimmed from the pompoms.)

Look how EASY it was to take a garland that was just sort of meh and turn it into two decor pieces. I could not be more PLEASED with how these two decor ideas turned out! Sometimes the quick spontaneous ideas turn out the BEST! Such CUTE neutral Valentine decor!

If you don’t really decorate for Valentines Day, or you like a neutral palette, I think these decor pieces aren’t limited to just February 14. They could be displayed anytime of the year!
I hope I’ve inspired you to think outside the box in your creative endeavors and give this idea a try.
Until next time…
Happy Crafting!
Pamela
