Seagrass Planter – A Coastal Farmhouse DIY

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Seagrass Planter – A Coastal Farmhouse DIY

Hello Sweet Friends,

You know the best way to beat the HEAT this summer? Stay in and get CREATIVE with some coastal farmhouse crafts! This easy-breezy craft will remind you of the BEACH without the heat and humidity. You’ll be as HAPPY as a clam! (My apologies for the silly puns)

Anyway, on to the DIY. Follow along to see how to create this coastal farmhouse seagrass planter.

Supply list

  • rectangular wooden box (got mine at Target)
  • floral foam
  • five bundles of faux onion grass (Dollar Tree)
  • white rock (Dollar Tree)
  • starfish embellishment (Dollar Tree)
  • white paint and paint brush
  • glue gun
  • wire cutters
  • scissors

The first step is to whitewash the wooden box to look like weathered barn wood or driftwood. The white wash affect is accomplished by watering down some white paint and brushing onto all sides of the box. Any acrylic white paint will work; I used Waverly plaster chalk paint.

Next, glue floral foam into the bottom of the box. Try to fill up the bottom surface as much as possible. But leave an inch or so below the top rim of the box. This will leave room for the white rock.

Cut the bundles of faux onion grass, but leaving the stems long enough to insert into the floral foam.

Fill in the box with enough of the white rock to cover the foam and the base of the stems of onion grass. If desired, cut a few smaller stems of the onion grass to fill in a little more.

Using scissors gently curl a few pieces of the onion grass to make it look more realistic.

Glue an embellishment such as a starfish to the front of the box. Or you could use a seashell found at the beach instead. I got this starfish from Dollar Tree.

How CUTE is this? I am so pleased with house this little project turned out! It will be the PERFECT addition to any coastal decor display. I hope I’ve given you some inspiration to create something similar for your home decor.

Until next time….

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
