St. Patrick’s Sign using Dollar Tree items

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / St. Patrick’s Sign using Dollar Tree items

Most people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green or having corn beef and cabbage for dinner. It is not one of those holidays that most people decorate their homes for. Or if they do, it will just be a few items. But I love everything about the day including decorating my home. St. Pat’s Day is upon us and I have an easy budget-friendly little craft for you to try using mostly items from Dollar Tree and Walmart.

Items you will need for this craft

  • two signs from Dollar tree
  • white acrylic or chalk paint and paint brush
  • antique wax
  • various ribbons
  • wood beads
  • twine or pipe cleaner
  • glue gun
  • scissors
I love the shape of this Dollar Tree sign but not crazy about the image.

The first step is to paint the sign with white paint. When the paint has dried, then lightly brush with antique wax or brown acrylic paint.

I forgot to get a picture with the antique wax. Oops!

For this project I am only using the center section of the sign with the “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” message. The other two pieces will be set aside for other projects. So I cut the middle sign off of the ribbon and hot glued it to the center of the painted and waxed sign.

The next step is to make a hanger for the sign. I had removed the twine hanger before painting and could have used twine to hang it again, but I decided to make a beaded hanger using wooden beads and a green pipe cleaner.

Before assembling, I made a small bow to add also. I just cut four to five inch lengths of ribbons and stacked them together, tying them together in the middle with a pipe cleaner. I also dovetailed the ends of the ribbons.

I like to use different widths, textures, and colors of ribbon to coordinate with my project.

To attach the beaded hanger, just feed the pipe cleaner ends through the pre-drilled holes already on the sign. Fasten the pipe cleaner securely by twisting it back around. Then glue the ribbon on. I made curlicues with the extra green pipe cleaner on the bow, or you could just cut off the extra if you want. Also I added a little sparkle to the center of the bow.

I am very pleased with how this easy craft project turned out. What do you think?

I hope I’ve inspired you to add some St. Patrick’s Day decor to your home.

Happy Crafting!!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
