Hello Sweet Friends,
For today’s craft idea, I will be showing you a thrift store sign makeover. The original sign wasn’t really my style, but it definitely had potential; it was a good size and very sturdy. I knew with a little bit of creativity, It could be transformed into something beautiful.
My first thought was to make something with a fall theme, but I ended up creating a sign that could be used year-round. I hope you like this idea as much as I do. Follow along for all the details.
Supply List
- Thrift store sign
- white spray paint
- Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster
- Waverly antique wax
- metal word Welcome from Dollar Tree
- Mod Podge
- Cinnamon
- glue gun
- E6000 glue
- floral embellishment

As you can see, the original sign needed a little bit of help. Well, okay, a LOT of help. I wanted to start off with a clean slate, so I took it outside and sprayed the entire sign with spray paint. To cover the dark colors, it took two coats with dry time in between.
Once the sign was dry, I brought it back inside to work on it. Using chalk paint this time, I gave the sign another coat. I also added a little antique wax around the edges to give it an aged look.

Let’s move on to the next step: the word Welcome
While the paint was drying on the sign, I started working on the metal word “welcome”. Instead of painting it another color, I decided to cover it with cinnamon to give it a rustic look.

To get the rustic look, I applied a coat of Mod Podge to the word, then sprinkled cinnamon onto it. I made sure to catch any excess cinnamon on a paper plate to use later.

A topcoat of Mod Podge was added to finish it off. Don’t you just love the rustic look of this? And of course, it smells wonderful.

After the Mod Podge had dried, it was time to attach the word to the sign. This was accomplished using E6000 glue instead of a glue gun. I dabbed the E6000 on the widest parts of the letters, taking care to not overdo it. When I placed the word on the sign, I did not want any excess glue showing.

While I was waiting for the glue to dry, I decided what embellishments I wanted to add to the sign. As I mentioned before, I decided to use some neutral florals and ribbon so the sign could be displayed year-round.
Let’s finish up the thrift store sign makeover
After the embellishments were added with hot glue, the sign looks FABULOUS! At least i think so.

And here’s another picture; so pretty!

I hope you have found this tutorial useful, and that it has inspired you to create something beautiful for your home.
Until next time……….. Happy crafting!
