Hello Friends,
I just love the new DIY project I have for you today! When I’m at an antique store, flea market or resale shop, I’ve always admired those vintage kitchen scales. I’ve even seen reproductions of them in stores these days. An authentic vintage scale can sell for $50 and up, which is a little out of my budget. So I decided to try to make a more budget-friendly version of one, using mostly Dollar Tree items. Follow along and I’ll show you how.
Items used for this project
- wax warmer and trinket dish from Dollar Tree
- square sign (or something square for the base)
- metal lid from grated cheese (can be any flat round object, even cardboard)
- photo of scale face printed on glossy photo paper
- white chalk paint
- beige spray paint
- brown acrylic paint
- glue gun and E6000 glue
I began this project by giving all items a coat of white chalk paint, except the wax warmer. Chalk paint will stick to just about any surface no matter how smooth it is. I also wanted to make sure to cover up all of the designs/writing on each item. It took two coats of paint.
Using the spray paint, I gave everything a coat of beige so each piece would match. Then I assembled the pieces together, using a combination of the hot glue and E6000 glue; hot glue for a temporary hold and E6000 for a more permanent hold.
It was time to age the “scale” with some rust. To do this, I used brown acrylic paint. I was going to use a little red mixed in, but ended up not using the red. Somehow it still got in the picture. Oops! I just painted brown wherever I thought looked good, no rhyme or reason.
I printed up a picture I found online for the face of the scale, using glossy photo paper, cut it out, and glued to the front of the scale. Wow! I’m loving how this little budget-friendly scale is looking!
I just can’t believe how cute and how easy this little project was. Until I’m able to get an authentic scale of my own, I’m planning on keeping this little guy in my kitchen, and changing out the decor with each season.
I hope I’ve given you some inspiration to make one for yourself. It really was a fairly simple project to make.
Until next time…
