Cheap and Easy Farmhouse Decor

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / Cheap and Easy Farmhouse Decor

Hello Sweet Friends,

I’m back with another DIY project for you; a cheap and easy farmhouse decor craft. For this project I used a Dollar Tree silver tray, a Dollar General mini metal cow, some paint, and pages from an old dictionary. In other words, a very budget-friendly craft idea.

The finished piece would be perfect for kitchen decor, especially if you decorate in the farmhouse style. I can’t believe how CUTE is turned out; I hope you like it as much as I do.

So, let’s get to it!

Supply list

  • Dollar Tree metal tray
  • Dollar General mini metal cow
  • Waverly chalk paint – color plaster
  • black paint
  • paint brush
  • dictionary pages
  • Mod Podge
  • hot glue gun
  • various coordinating ribbons and twine
  • faux foliage
  • embellishment
  • small piece of wire
  • scissors

The first step in creating this farmhouse decor was to paint the silver tray with Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster, a very nice off-white color. It took two coats with dry time in between.

Then I removed the wire hanger from the little metal cow. I wanted to camouflage the holes so I taped over them on the back side, then painted some black paint on the front to fill in.

After tearing some old dictionary pages into pieces, I applied them to the silver tray with some Mod Podge. I left the outer perimeter off-white, and put the dictionary pieces in the center of the tray. Then I added a top layer of the Mod Podge to seal it.

For the next step I simply hot glued the little metal cow onto the tray, centering as much as possible. But also leaving a little room for a bow at the top.

To create the bow, I cut strips of coordinating ribbon and criss-crossed them into a stack. I secured it in the center with a small piece of wire and then trimmed the ribbons.

The bow was then hot glued to the top of the tray and a few pieces of faux greenery were added.

A small twine bow and a decorative button completed the look.

Can you believe how STINKIN’ CUTE this piece turned out? It would perfectly complement my previous DIY, you should check it out if you like farmhouse decor, right here.

I hope I’ve inspired you with this DIY project. Create something similar or something totally different. Just get CREATIVE! There’s no right or wrong way to craft. Just have FUN with it!

Until next time….

Happy Crafting!
Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
