Hello Sweet Friends,

Today’s DIY is a Christmas thrift flip where I will show you how to take a thrifted framed print and turn it into beautiful Christmas decor. I found these two prints in a thrift store this summer and loved the detail on the frames, but did not really like the prints. All they needed was a makeover with a little imagination.

Back home, I had these Christmas ornament/initials spelling the word MERRY. I’ve had the letters/initials for several years but just was not sure what I wanted to create with them. This Christmas thrift flip turned out to be the perfect project!

Follow along as I show you just how easy it was to flip one of the thrifted framed prints into a beautiful piece of Christmas decor.

Supplies needed

  • Thrifted framed print
  • white paint, I used Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster
  • red paint, I used Apple Barrel in the color bright red
  • letters/initials spelling M-E-R-R-Y, found at Walmart
  • section of green garland and faux greenery, Dollar Tree
  • red berries and red velvet ribbon
  • glue gun
  • Mod Podge
  • faux snow

As you can see, the prints were just so-so, a little out-dated. But the frames had some detail around the edges. So I thought one of them would be good for this make-over project.

Let’s get started

The first thing that I did was to remove the print from the frame and set aside. Then I painted the frame with white paint. It took a few coats with dry time in between.

The print was mounted on a heavy piece of cardboard. So I chose to just paint it with red paint. It took several coats of the paint to cover the image. And once the paint was dry, I placed it back into the frame.

Next, I moved onto the letters. The letters have been hanging around in my craft stash for a few years so I was so happy to finally have an idea for them.
The letters/ornaments were pre-strung with a piece of twine. So I decided I would leave the twine on them for this project.

Before adding the letters to the project, I glued a piece of green garland along the top of the frame. Then I glued the letters spelling out MERRY so they looked like they were hanging from the garland. After adding some berries and faux greenery embellishments, the project was almost finished.

Finishing up the Christmas Thrift Flip

I decided to paint some “snow” onto the letters and berries. Once the paint was dry, faux snow was added using a little Mod Podge. The final embellishment was to add a few red velvet bows on either end of the garland. And oh my gosh, didn’t this turn out super CUTE! I’m totally crushing on it. I just LOVE how it looks!

This project will look so good displayed in my home this Christmas season.

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
