Hello Sweet Friends,
Summertime is such a FUN time of year; vacations, picnics, swimming, baseball, fireworks etc. It’s also a great season to break out the red, white, and blue decor for July 4th.
Today I’m featuring an easy DIY patriotic decor that was created using a small Dollar Tree sign. Add some paint, colorful ribbons, and a glue gun – and you’ve got yourself some pretty CUTE Americana decor.
I’ve had this little sign from Dollar Tree for a few years, so I’m not sure they’re available in the store anymore. But I think any small square sign could be used to create this piece; even a rectangular sign would work.
Follow along and see just how easy this little project was to create.
Supply list
- small square wooden Dollar Tree sign
- blue and white paint
- paint brush
- various red and white ribbons, ricrac, cording
- scissors
- glue gun
- small embellishment, optional
The first step for this patriotic project was to paint the sign blue, including the sides, using Waverly chalk paint in the color ocean. It took two coats with ample dry time in between.
Once the blue paint had dried, I painted the star with white paint: using Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster. It took two coats, plus a quick touch up, for good coverage.
For the next step, I gathered up various narrow red and white ribbons and ricrac that I already had in my craft stash. I wasn’t sure how many I would need or use, so I just grabbed what I had.
I decided to make the ribbon streamers about three times the width of the sign. The sign is five inches square, so my ribbons were cut to around 15 inches each. I used a total of 14 streamers, including the ricrac.
Next, I just glued the streamers onto the bottom of the sign using a glue gun. I overlapped some of them, and just kept glueing until I liked the way it looked.
Isn’t this piece already looking so CUTE? It really is almost finished at this point.
Of course, I never know when to stop, so I decided to add some red and white cording at the base of the sign and also made a hanger with the cording. Ribbon around the sides and a small bow for embellishment will finish the decor piece.
As you can probably tell, I am really LOVING this little project! OMG, how CUTE!!!! It looks so good on the antique gate in my back yard.
This decor piece is not really meant for outdoors, so I will probably be moving it indoors soon.
I hope this idea inspires you to create something similar for your home. It’s EASY, budget-friendly, and best of all, PRETTY! So get creative with it and make something pretty for your home.
Until next time……
Happy Crafting!
Pamela
