From Clearance Tray to Christmas Decor Piece

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / From Clearance Tray to Christmas Decor Piece

Hello Sweet Friends,

It’s time for a new Christmas DIY project and do I have a CUTE one for YOU today! I’ve had one of those small cardboard Christmas signs from Dollar General for a few years now, and I just could not decide what I wanted to do with it. I also had this super cute tray I purchased on clearance from the local Orscheln’s, a farm and home store. I really LOVE the metal tray; the shape of it, the trim color, etc. But I just felt a little meh about the spring design on the tray. So I thought, why NOT combine the two? So that’s just what I did! The trim COLOR of the tray sort of matched a color on the Christmas sign; it reminded me of the vintage blue of old mason jars. So I think these two items went together PERFECTLY! Follow along for all the details.

Supply list

  • clearance tray (or any tray of your choice)
  • Dollar General $1 sign
  • white paint and paint brush
  • glue gun
  • adhesive sparkles, optional
  • mod-podge
  • faux snow, optional
Clearance tray makeover

My first step in this makeover was to paint the inner surface of the tray with white paint to cover up the spring image. I used chalk paint but any acrylic paint will do. If you decided to create something similar, you may want to paint the entire tray. But I only wanted to paint the inner part and retain the outer edge in the vintage blue color. It took two good coats to completely cover the image.

Next, I removed the ribbon from the Dollar General sign and set aside. Then simply glued the sign onto the tray with hot glue and pressed into place. For a more lasting effect, I would recommend also using some E6000 glue in addition to the hot glue.

To somewhat camouflage the holes left when I removed the ribbon, I used some adhesive sparkles I found at Dollar Tree. I add extra sparkles around the perimeter of the sign for a more uniform look.

I then added some faux snow around the perimeter of the tray using Mod Podge. I did small sections at a time, shaking off any excess faux snow.

After shaking off all of the excess “snow”, I allowed the Mod-Podge to dry and the project was finished.

I have to say, I was SO excited with how this little makeover project turned out! I mean, how CUTE is this Christmas tray with the vintage vibe?

It can be displayed with other vintage Christmas objects like these cookie cutters. How CUTE!! I’m LOVIN’ the vintage Christmas look!!

Doesn’t this mini vintage bluetooth speaker look PERFECT displayed alongside the tray and cookie cutters? You can easily listen to Christmas music as you bake Christmas cookies. How fun! My associate link is here –> https://amzn.to/3EnDgDk if you would like to purchase one, too. (As an Amazon Associate, I receive a small commission if you decide to purchase)

I hope I’ve inspired you to create something similar for your home this Christmas!

Until next time…

Happy Crafting!

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
