Hello Sweet Friends,
I have the cutest DIY project for you today: a mini CANDY CANE Christmas tree! I previously had published a similar post featuring a DIY downswept ribbon mini tree here, but it was in neutral colors instead of the BRIGHT red and white, candy cane, peppermint, theme. Y’all know that I LOVE my neutrals, even for Christmas, but I seem to be LOVIN’ the bright colors this holiday season; this DIY is proof of that. Even my Christmas tree has more reds and whites this year! It’s hard to resist the sweetness and whimsy of this Christmas decor theme.
If you find yourself leaning toward the red and white theme this year, follow along and see just how seriously EASY this project is to make!
Supply list
- Dollar Tree mini white Christmas tree
- various ribbons in red and white
- mini red and white pompoms
- scissors
- glue gun
- small container and floral foam for tree, optional
- peppermint embellishment for treetop, optional
The mini Christmas tree and pompoms are both from Dollar Tree. The ribbons are from various places; Walmart, Michael’s, Dollar Tree, etc. Whenever I came across a cute red/white ribbon roll, I grabbed it. Also, I should note that narrow ribbon works much better that wide ribbon for this tree. And wired ribbon works better than non-wired.
Begin this project by laying the tree flat on the work surface and bending the individual tree “branches” straight out in both directions. There will be five distinct rows when finished. See below:
Tie ribbons onto the “trunk” of the tree, starting at the bottom and working upwards. Measure the pieces of ribbon to be a little longer than the width of the branches next to where you will be tying them on. So the ribbon pieces will be longer near the lower branches and shorter pieces of ribbon will be used near the top of the tree. Six to seven pieces of ribbon between each row look very pleasing. (The ribbon pieces at the very bottom of the tree can be shorter, or if desired, can be left off altogether.)
Once you have tied all of the ribbons on, the tree is ready to be shaped up. Starting at the bottom, begin to bend the tree branches and ribbons into a downswept direction. Continue upward until finished. The top branch should be cut down and bent in amongst the topmost branches. It will look like a hot mess, but keep going. I’m sure you will be happy with the results.
If you have a small container to put the tree in, now is the time to do that. (Can you believe the container I used is an old Mikasa candle holder painted white?) Or simply use the tree stand that comes with the tree.
Glue on the small red and white pompoms onto the tree wherever desired. There are four different sizes in the package, but I only used the two middle sizes.
Nearly finished! All that is left to do is add an embellishment to the treetop. I found these cute faux peppermints on Amazon and I thought one would make the perfect treehopper for this cute little tree. The final step is also optional. Dovetail or trim the ribbons as desired. Make any final shape-ups and then call it DONE!
How CUTE did this little tree turn out? I’m seriously CRUSHING on it!!! I’m like a kid in a CANDY store!!
I hope I’ve inspired you to get craftsy and create a mini candy cane tree this holiday season for your home. It’s “MINT” to be! (LOL see what I did there?)
Until next time…..
