DIY Lemon-Themed Decor using a Calendar Page

You are here: Home / Budget-Friendly / DIY Lemon-Themed Decor using a Calendar Page

Hello Sweet Friends,

Today’s DIY craft project is a lemon-themed decor piece using the June calendar page from Jennifer Pugh’s 2023 Seasons of Joy calendar. I have been working through this calendar, creating a craft project for each month, and I’m currently at June which has a very SWEET lemon image. To be honest, I haven’t really decorated with lemons in the past, but I had to give it a shot. And.. I just LOVE the result. It’s very easy and budget-friendly and I hope you like it as much as I do. Follow along to see the steps I took to create this decor piece.

Supply list

  • June calendar image from 2023 Seasons of Joy calendar
  • Dollar Tree burner cover
  • cording, jute, or twine
  • faux lemon and foliage stems, ribbon, other embellishment
  • scissors and pencil
  • Mod Podge and brush
  • glue gun
  • parchment paper
  • small iron
  • sandpaper
  • wirecutters

To begin this project I traced the burner cover (I used the larger burner cover of a two pack) onto the calendar page, centering the image as best as I could. Then I cut along the trace line. Unfortunately I had to remove the bottom line of the image – our favorite place to be – because it would not fit within the circle.

Next up, I applied a liberal coat of Mod Podge to the burner cover and pressed the lemon calendar image onto it, smoothing out any air bubbles.

Then I trimmed any excess around the burner cover and applied a topcoat of Mod Podge. I let the whole thing dry overnight.

There were still a few air bubbles to smooth out. I did this by using parchment paper and a small crafting iron. This technique really helps smooth the surface of the image.

Using sandpaper, I smoothed the edges, removing any remaining paper from the outer edge.

For the next step, I glued brown and white cording around the edge of the burner cover. The cording was a leftover Christmas item, but I think twine or jute would work just as well. I began glueing at the top of the image and worked around the burner cover, adding glue as I went, and kept going until the edge was completely covered.

At this point, I was nearly finished. All that this sign needed was some embellishing. I chose to add a ribbon and faux lemons and foliage. Walmart had the perfect lemon/foliage stems to add to this project and they were only 99¢ each. Yay! I bought four but really only needed two of them. But I did put the extra stems to good use.

After separating all of the stems individually with wire cutters, I began glueing the stems to the outer edge of the burner cover sign. The stems adhered very well to the cording. I started with the outer stems and worked my way towards the center. In addition to the faux lemon stems, I used some faux lamb’s ear.

And BAM! I had myself a super CUTE piece of lemon decor. Easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)

So what did I do with those leftover faux lemon stems? Well, I decided to make a companion piece to go with the Home Sweet Home lemon sign.

The same calendar has some mini images from each month, so I Mod Podged the June image to a small jar. Then painted the remaining part of the jar with white paint. I finished it by gluing the cording around the top of the jar. A small piece of floral foam and a few faux lemon stems later, I had myself a cute little lemon arrangement to match my new lemon-themed sign.

I think these two DIY projects look SUPER cute together. What do you think?

I hope I’ve inspired you to try this DIY or something similar. Change it up to match your decor. So simple and budget-friendly!

Until next time…..

Happy Crafting!

Pamela

Meet Pamela, the Creator

Pamela, Creator

Born and raised in rural, Missouri, I'm a wife of 30 years and mother to one adult son.

My interest in all things artsy-craftsy began as a young girl. If there was a craft kit for it, I've probably tried it: paint-by-number, latch-hooking rugs, candle-making, shrinky-dinks, string-art, etc. I loved them all! For many years I was able to express my creativity on-the-job as a florist, and love using silk florals in my home decorating projects.

I'm excited to share my crafting and home decorating ideas with you. I like finding that perfect thrift store item and crafting something new out of it, or giving that old piece of furniture a new life with a fresh coat of paint. I hope my projects will inspire you to get craftsy and create things to help decorate a home you love.

Happy Crafting!
